When I was a kid, we were afraid of the Russians because they had better aircraft, good tanks, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and tens of thousands of nuclear warheads all aimed at us and our allies.
Now that this threat is greatly reduced, we all act as if we are afraid of guys that live in tents and hide in caves. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as if they haven’t shown that they can be dangerous (in spectacular fashion) in the past. There just seems to be something so phony about this "threat".
Why is it, the war against "terror" or "Ismalo fascism"? Why not at least "the war against Al-Qaeda" or the "Taliban"? It’s not the semantics that concern me, but more the melodrama of declaring a war against a concept, or made up term as opposed to states, organizations, factions, militias or armies.
In the end, two extremist right wingers just murdered Americans in cold blood. I wonder why people and groups such as Timothy McVeigh, the KKK, and all of the groups that send death threats to abortion clinics don’t get the prominence of having a war declared against them. Instead we’ve chosen to focus our efforts toward the guys in the tents.
Perhaps that’s why it’s called "the war on terror". We are not actually focused on where the most danger lurks, but instead on the people who look the most foreign and mysterious.
Can’t we at least just get real and call it what it is? The War on Drummed Up Fear, Which was Declared in Order to Justify Middle East Military Action in Order to get Some Cheap Oil
Do you guys really fear "terrorists" from the Middle East? Do you really go to grocery stores worried about car bombs?
lol24: you get my point dead on.
Ian D: Another country was irrational enough to attack us on American soil. It happened on December 7, 1941.
Case: awesome answer! You’ve stated the obvious, yet look how many people continue to tote the line despite the big pink elephant in the room.
BTW, I don’t believe Bush planned 9/11. Sometimes it’s possible to know that you are going to be attacked and let the attack happen in order to justify your own attack (that you’ve been planning all along). If believe this point is irrelevant, look into the RMS Lusitania, Pearl Harbor and the Golf of Tonkin.
